Rock Creek AllianceSince 1987, ASARCO (American Smelting and Refining Company), a multi-national mining corporation, has been trying to secure a permit from Kootenai National Forest and Montana's Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) to build an enormous underground copper/silver mine in northwest Montana. The mine would be developed underneath the magnificent Cabinet Mountains Wilderness Area (CMWA) near the town of Noxon, roughly 15 miles from the Idaho border and 25 miles upstream of Lake Pend Orielle, Idaho's largest fresh-water lake.
